Are you a waste warrior? (Article from Bayside Council)
Waste champs wanted
SUSTAINABILITY
More and more Bayside residents are re-thinking their waste.
As we continue to encourage a more
waste-conscious community, many
Baysiders are joining our campaign to
reduce what we send to landfill. And we
want to hear from you.
We'd love to know what tips and tricks
you are using to reduce your waste.
With approximately 83 per cent of
Bayside households now using our food &
green waste service, we are now diverting
60 per cent of our waste from landfill.
We are moving in the right direction
but there is still progress to be made.
According to our most recent audit, food
waste still makes up about 36 per cent
of the general waste bin.
Recyclables (cardboard, hard plastics,
glass, aluminium, etc.) makes up 18 per
cent.
Therefore, more than half of the
contents of the average Bayside
garbage bin can be recovered, saving
you space in your bin each week, and
rescuing materials from landfill.
Of the recyclables found, paper was
the highest, making up 11 per cent of
the bin's contents. Clothing and textiles
made up about 5 per cent, food in its
original container, often unopened,
made up almost 11 per cent, E-waste --
which is now banned from landfill, was
one per cent of the bin and ten per cent
was soft plastics.
These statistics show us how making
small changes to how we use our bins
can make a big, environmentally-friendly
difference.
To further decrease the amount of
waste we send to landfill, your food and
green waste will be collected weekly and
general waste fortnightly from July.
In the lead up to the change, we are
helping the community to re-think their
waste and consumption habits. We
know many of you are already doing
this well which is why we want to share
your stories.
